Photographing weddings is truly such an honor. We find it so very rewarding to be able to create art of these beautiful moments, that will be passed down for generations to come. Capturing these amazing days for my clients, is something that we never take for granted.
After being a fine art student in college, it took me a few years of traveling and continued education to decide to pursue wedding photography. I could not have been happier with the choice I made back then, and since October of last year my husband, Thijs, has joined me on this incredible journey. We still love to travel and have decided to start spending our summers shooting in Europe, based out of Thijs’ native home of Amsterdam. We are hybrid shooters, and incorporate a lot of film into our work. The soft colors, grain, and movement in film photography are so beautifully authentic, and I’ve fallen in love the process of capturing weddings and portraits with analog photography.
When I returned to the States after living in Spain, I contacted a lady who was a very successful art director at a world-renown ad agency. At the time, I thought that this was the field I also wanted to pursue, and I was hoping for her advice on how to begin working at an agency like hers. She was kind enough to meet me for coffee, and completely opened my eyes as to what I should be doing; follow my passion. In less than 15 minutes she made me realize that my passion was still photography, and to this day, I cannot imagine doing anything else. What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced?
Living in Barcelona was both one of the best and most challenging experiences I have faced. To immerse myself in a new culture helped me to develop as a person, and I feel like it will benefit me for the rest of my life. At the same time, it was also more difficult than I would have ever anticipated. My studies were all in Spanish, and although my fellow students were international, all of them came from Spanish speaking countries. I thought about giving up many times, but being able to overcome all of the initial the difficulties still feels like one of my greatest accomplishments.
Tell us a little bit about this wedding?
Rocklands Farm is one of my favorite rustic venues in the DC area, and I’ve been so fortunate to shoot a few weddings at this unique venue over the past few years. Capturing a couple like Andrew and Colleen made things even more amazing! They were one of the favorite couples to work with, so sweet and flexible at all times. They planned an intimate ceremony in the barn, where they spoke their vows to each other in front of family and friends that they hold most dear. Colleen’s gorgeous short shift BHLDN wedding dress was perfectly complemented by a custom tulle skirt, which made for the most amazing portraits around the property and the river. The evening was a perfect summer party for their guests, full of lawn games, wildflowers, dancing, and fabulous cupcakes. The joyful perspective and relaxed vibe they had envisioned for their wedding is exactly what every wedding should be like!
